Praised for her ‘breath-taking skills’ (BBC Radio 2), British harpist Emily Hoile is in demand as a soloist, chamber and orchestral musician throughout Europe. Hailing from Newcastle upon Tyne UK, she has won prizes worldwide for her playing, notably at the USA International Harp Competition, International Harp Contest in Israel and Cité des Arts International Harp Competition, Paris.
Emily is Principal Harp of the WDR Symphony Orchestra, Cologne. Her orchestral career began when she joined the Karajan Academy in 2014, allowing her the opportunity to perform extensively with the Berlin Philharmonic. She has collaborated regularly with numerous major orchestras including the Munich Philharmonic, Concertgebouw Orchestra, Bavarian Radio Symphony, Paris Opera, Gewandhaus Orchestra and Mahler Chamber Orchestra under conductors such as Mariss Jansons, Sir Simon Rattle and Gustavo Dudamel.
As a concerto soloist, Emily has performed with orchestras including the WDR Sinfonieorchester, Sinfonieorchester Aachen, Sinfonieorchester Biel-Solothurn and the Thuringer Symphoniker.
Her debut solo album 'Ballade' was released in April 2021.
An avid chamber musician, Emily performs regularly with the WDR Chamber Players and has collaborated with groups such as the Franz Ensemble and Hebrides Ensemble as well as live on BBC Radio 3, WDR3, BR Klassik and France Musique. With fellow harpist Marion Ravot, she performed Stockhausen’s Freude for two harps in the Berlin Philharmonie.
Emily is a passionate teacher of Harp. In 2023 she was appointed as teacher of harp at the Conservatorium Maastricht as well as being a mentor in the WDR Symphony Orchestra Academy. She loves to geek out about harp with her students, dig deep into their music and help them to achieve their goals! She regularly gives masterclasses internationally, including at the Juilliard School, Hanns Eisler Berlin and Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
Having grown up in the north of England, Emily is heavily influenced by the folk music of the area. After moving to Edinburgh and learning with Isobel Mieras, Emily began her studies at St Mary’s Music Edinburgh with Catriona Mckay and Helen Macleod. At the same time she was a member of Folkestra, led by Kathryn Tickell, with whom she performed at the first ever Folk Prom in the Royal Albert Hall as well as with artists such as Ajimal and Sting.
A graduate of the Juilliard School, the Haute École de Musique de Lausanne and the Karajan Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic, Emily has had the privilege of studying with Nancy Allen, Letizia Belmondo and Marie-Pierre Langlamet.
Emily is based in Cologne, Germany. Besides music, she enjoys walking her (crazy) dog at the Rhine and is currently training for her first Marathon!
